Electrician Skills

This list should serve as a reference for all Lightshop student staff. These are the skills you will be evaluated on at the end of each semester. Please try to track your individual progress through this list. If you feel you need training in any of these areas please see the lightshop staff to schedule a training session.

 

Introductory- mastery of these skills is required during first semester for continued employment

  • Hanging Lights
  • Accessorizing Instruments
  • Circuiting Lights
  • Focusing Lights
  • Basic Console Operation
  • Follow spot Operation
  • Basic Rigging Operation


Basic (Electrician Level)- mastery of these skills should occur by end of second semester of employment

  • Read plot
  • Use Lightwrite to generate paperwork
    • Channel Hookup
    • Instrument Schedule
    • Color & Pattern Schedules
  • Independently hang and circuit a lighting plot using above resources
  • Understanding of DMX distribution
  • Input circuiting into Lightwrite and generate patch
  • Intermediate console operation
    • Patching
    • Submasters
    • Groups
    • Color Fader Attributes
    • Tracking
    • Basic Setup
    • Basic Trouble Shooting
    • Set up of remote nodes; faders, tech table
  • Rigging
    • Effectively calculate weights for rigging system
    • Competently load and check weight of rigged linsets
    • Have enough working knowledge to effectively recognize problems with the rigging systems
  • Projection
    • Ability to install projectors and hook up
    • Ability to connect video & computers to projector
  • Supervision
    • Ability to breakdown tasks of hang and focus into subtasks and effectively assign and monitor crew progress on subtasks

     

Advanced (Student Supervisor Level)

  • Advanced console operation
    • Moving light cuing
    • Ability to independently design and cue show from rep plot
    • High level of trouble shooting skill
    • Good understanding of Strand networking and DMX
  • Van Qualified
  • Vectorworks / Lightwrite
    • Ability to create Plot and Paperwork
  • Projection Equipment
    • Accurately plan location of projection equipment
    • Interconnect and trouble shoot projection equipment
    • Effectively use projection software
  • Supervision
    • Effectively supervise crew of 6-8 working in smaller teams
    • Effectively utilize a full lighting crew through the entire hang and focus process
    • Demonstrated ability to teach incoming employees all the basic skills
